In mid-2021, in the United States began the phenomenon known as the «Great Resignation» that has echoed internationally. As its name suggests, it consisted of a massive resignation of professionals in different areas in the United States. 

This year there were 68.9 million layoffs, of which 47.4 million were voluntary resignations. The reason? After almost a year of remote work, employees were pressured to return to face-to-face work. Many employees decided to leave their jobs at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic amid hospitalizations and deaths. 

In a way, these actions were a protest due to reflection. People weighed the importance of their personal lives concerning office-based work. If there is a dynamic and ever-changing market, it is the labor market. With the advent of globalization, the Internet has grown with impetus in the last two decades. In addition, in the previous two years, the pandemic has revolutionized the workspaces, and therefore, the job offers have diversified.

The Internet took a crucial role in searching for new jobs and personnel for employers and companies. Just as the pandemic and its quarantine had an unexpected impact on the labor market, it isn’t easy to know the exact future of the home office and its long-term permanence.

However, in particular, one issue is interesting to analyze. The «Big Quit» phenomenon highlighted the conflict that companies will face in the coming months or years: are they ready to adapt to remote work by their employees permanently? And are those that flatly refuse to abandon face-to-face work prepared to face the risk of a massive drain of personnel and talent?

The future remains uncertain due to COVID-19. Considering the advances in technology, perhaps it is time to accept that the office is not as indispensable as once thought. It is most likely for an employee to find productivity, creativity, and happiness working at the home office.
